How to Beat Procrastination and Increase your Productivity

As women entrepreneurs, we are notorious for “doing-all-the-things” in our businesses. We strive to be the “Jane of all trades” as often said. While ambition is a good thing, piling the work on and creating a never-ending to-do list is a surefire way to wind up burnt out and exhausted. This exhaustion often leads to procrastination. Procrastination is the result of not respecting your time and your energy.

So why do we procrastinate?

Let’s have a quick reflection about this. Ask yourself,  “Why do I constantly delay things on my to-do list?” or “Why do I keep procrastinating when I know it’s bad for me and for my business?”

The answers to these simple questions will have a big impact on the quality of your work and your life.

Here are a few reasons why we tend to procrastinate:

Perfectionism
Lack of Motivation
Lack of Energy
Feeling overwhelmed
Anxiety

As women entrepreneurs, we tend to be perfectionists. Perfectionism can lead to procrastination in a number of ways, the fear of committing a mistake is common. As a result, we might delay the things we’re working on because we want every aspect of it perfectly executed. You want to have a website as perfect as what you saw from entrepreneur X, yet you delayed even buying your domain in the first place or having it done professionally with a web designer. This small act of delaying things can make or break your business.

We tend to see people around us, especially on social media, having a perfect life and thriving business as if everything is perfect.

We also tend to procrastinate because we aren’t motivated enough to accomplish a specific task. If you’re working with a client that doesn’t match your value set or drains your energy, procrastination may become your way of dealing with them. To eliminate this it’s important to have clear communication with your clients at the onset of working with them.

At Social Circle, we send a questionnaire to all prospective brand and web design clients to make sure we’re a good fit prior to working together. These questions help us better understand what a prospective client is looking to achieve and allow us to lay the foundation for a good working relationship. When you enjoy working with a client and are both aligned you’ll be a lot more motivated to do the work.

We also tend to forget that our understanding of our body is also a huge factor in procrastination. It’s very common for entrepreneurs to just ignore their bodies and continue to work even when they are not feeling well but whether we realize it or not, when we don’t feel well our work quality suffers. It’s important to listen to your body and prioritize rest when needed.

In a recent episode of the Hustle With Purpose podcast, I had a conversation with Vikki Louise a feminist time coach. In the episode, we discussed how women have different energy levels in each cycle.

According to Vikki, “As women, we should always listen and understand our bodies. Women experience cycles due to hormonal changes. It’s important to take note that the things that worked last week may not necessarily work next week. Our creativity changes at the same time as our hormones. We often put ourselves into this rigid hole every day that we must start the day with the same routine in order to be successful and when that routine is disrupted we beat ourselves up and don’t feel like we are accomplishing anything.”

Finally, one of the most common reasons why people tend to procrastinate is overwhelm. Looking at most entrepreneurs, we’re always looking for ideas and processes on how we can have more time to accomplish a lot.

We end up overworked and overwhelmed with our business and also deal with our personal lives and we start to feel anxious about everything and just totally shut down and do nothing for hours or even for days which is not healthy for the business and also our bodies.

As business owners, we have to learn to embrace our zone of genius and let go of the things that we can’t control. If you feel exhausted when it comes to picking the right website platform, creating a cohesive brand or designing your own website, consider hiring a professional brand and web designer. Having your tasks delegated to a professional is a great way to focus on growing your business so you can stay in your zone of genius and feel inspired to produce your best work and live your best life!
